FOUR out of 10 UK Labour Party members back Scottish independence, according to a new poll.

A YouGov survey for The Times also found eight in 10 members surveyed across the UK would support entering a coalition government with the SNP at Westminster in the event of a hung parliament.

The poll found that 39% of party members who were questioned support Scotland leaving the UK, with 41% against, while a fifth said they do not know. In Scotland, opposition to independence was stronger, at 60%, with 31% in favour while 9% did not know.

Members backed electoral pacts with Remain parties to reverse Brexit, at 67% for and 25% against.

The vast majority of members back a coalition with the SNP in the event of a hung parliament after the next General Election, with 83% for to 10% against. A coalition with the LibDems had 58% support. The SNP said that with don’t-knows removed, 49% of UK Labour members across the UK are in favour of Scotland becoming an independent country.

MSP George Adam MSP said: “Scotland’s interests are being ignored and our voice silenced in the Brexit process. It’s little wonder support for independence is rising – particularly among the rank and file of the Labour Party who must be despairing at the lack of leadership in standing up to the Tories right now.”
