A senior police officer will be awarded an OBE after leading the UK response to the 2015 terrorist attacks in Sousse, Tunisia, where 30 British nationals were killed.
Detective Superintendent Mark Gower will receive the honour from the Queen during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony for services to policing.
The honour also recognises his efforts leading the response to the 2017 terrorist attack at Finsbury Park and heading the investigation to find the Parson Green bomber the same year.
Confectioner Sir Boyd Tunnock will be made a Knight Bachelor by the Queen during the ceremony for his services to business and charity.
Sir Boyd runs the family-owned Scottish company Tunnock’s and is the inventor of the popular Tunnock’s Teacake.
Speaking when the knighthood was announced he said: “When you get to my age, very few things surprise you but this certainly did and I am deeply honoured and grateful to Her Majesty the Queen.”
Also being recognised is Christie Spurling, the founder of the charity N-Gage, which aims to help students re-engage with education, who will be awarded an MBE.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
