The Sun newspaper has dramtically withdrawn support for Theresa May in a front page splash calling for her to step down as Prime Minister.

The right-wing paper had previously supported May, claiming that the PM could re-unite the Tories and deliver Brexit.

However, on Monday's front page, the paper confirmed "with regret" that it was now calling for her to go.

It went on to claim that May was a “dedicated public servant with an unshakeable sense of duty” and that the paper had backed her “since before she came Prime Minister”.

The change of position for The Sun, one of the most read newspapers in the UK, comes as the paper worries that, without her resignation, the UK could be "heading for a much softer Brexit — or none".

They argue that May's confirmation to step aside will secure the support needed to pass May's deal in Westminster.
