This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald.

TWELVE years after the independence referendum it's extraordinary there's still just one newspaper supporting and exploring the political future half of Scotland wants to see.

It's a bit of a family, with all the minor ructions a family tends to produce. But The National is more than that – it's also the only paper that reliably highlights popular causes from Gaza to land reform with a diversity of voices that appears nowhere else in the Scottish daily press.

After all these years, there are just a few ads and so many shops from high streets to hospitals who don't stock it – so our subscriptions keep the only daily pro-independence newspaper afloat.

It's just £20 for a whole lot of comment, news and analysis. If you can manage, do please lend your support.

Subscribe to The National for £20 for a whole year in our summer sale.
