A MAJOR airline has suspended some of its flights from Glasgow Airport in response to soaring jet fuel costs amid the war in Iran.
Lufthansa, one of the largest airlines in Europe, has removed its Glasgow to Frankfurt route from sale for winter 2026, according to The Herald.
The last direct Lufthansa flights between Glasgow and Frankfurt appear to be on Sunday, May 31, with the airline confirming it has suspended the route due to “high kerosene prices”.
It comes after the German airliner announced last week that it will cut 20,000 European short-haul flights over the summer, saying soaring fuel prices have made many journeys "unprofitable” for the firm.

Jet fuel has doubled in price since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran, as the conflict has slowed its production and transportation across the Middle East following the blockade of tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
A fifth of the world’s traded oil passes through the Strait in peacetime, and with the blockade and strikes on energy infrastructure in the region, the war in Iran has had far-reaching consequences for the global economy.
Experts have warned that travellers can expect further ticket price rises along with more cancelled flights as the conflict in the Middle East continues.
Customers have faced the economic brunt of the fuel shortage as several airliners have passed on the expenses through higher ticket prices, with several airlines, including KLM-France and Delta, having also temporarily cut some flights.
A Lufthansa Group spokesperson confirmed to The Herald that the flights will be suspended from Glasgow to Frankfurt.
“Following the decision to discontinue Lufthansa CityLine flights effective immediately and to reduce unprofitable flights in the future due to high kerosene prices, the Lufthansa Group’s summer schedule will be reduced by just under one percent of available seat-kilometers,” they said.
“To compensate for this, Lufthansa has taken immediate action and will consolidate the flight schedules of all Lufthansa Group airlines, cancelling 20,000 flights by the end of October.
“As a result of these decisions, flights to Glasgow will no longer be operated by Lufthansa via Frankfurt, but for the time being, by Edelweiss via Zurich offering access to the Swiss International Air Lines network.

“This means that passengers will continue to have a wide range of options for accessing the Lufthansa Group’s global network.”
The daily flights were first launched in March of 2018, with Lufthansa saying there was a growing demand from Scottish holidaymakers.
The airline giant also operates several flights between Germany and Edinburgh Airport.
Budget airline Ryanair also announced this week that it is set to cut half of its flights from Edinburgh Airport to Berlin.
Flights will also be cut from London, Manchester and Birmingham along with the Scottish capital.
The decision comes after Ryanair announced the closure of its seven-aircraft base in the German capital on October 24 this year.
