THE SNP have unveiled an election billboard highlighting key pledges to bring down Scots' bills as the campaign enters the final stretch.

With just over a week to go until Scots head to the polls, First Minister John Swinney revealed the giant billboard in Leith Walk, Edinburgh, displaying the slogan "the SNP wants to lower your bills, other parties are trying to stop us".

The party has recently unveiled plans to introduce a price cap on essential food items at supermarkets and a £2 cap on bus fares.

Swinney said: “People are really struggling with the cost of living – energy bills, fuel prices and the cost of food are skyrocketing and people are hurting.

“As First Minister, I want to take action to support people – reducing the cost of your daily commute, capping the cost of essential foods in supermarkets and bringing down electricity bills with the fresh start of independence.

“The SNP wants to lower your bills – and the other parties are trying to stop us.  They want people to vote for an opposition to stop things happening, I am asking people to vote for an SNP Government to get things done.

“The best way to ensure we can deliver is by electing a majority SNP Government – one that supports people with the cost of living, locks out Nigel Farage and delivers the fresh start of independence.

“But we have to make it happen – that opportunity is in Scotland’s hands.

“So on May 7, I am asking people to vote SNP for a government on Scotland’s side and for my reliable, trusted leadership that will support people with the cost of living.

Swinney has promised to limit the cost of up to 50 essential food items like bread, milk and eggs but the UK Government has claimed the plan is "undeliverable".

The SNP say it would provide “tangible relief for families struggling with grocery bills, ensuring that necessities for a balanced diet remain affordable”.

Elsewhere, Swinney has announced bus fares would be capped at £2 per journey if he becomes First Minister again.

It is understood the policy would include a subsidy for bus companies to cover the difference and it will have no geographical barriers – meaning, for instance, a journey from Glasgow to Skye would cost just £2.
