AROUND 100 jobs are at risk of redundancy at a Scottish energy firm.

Spirit Energy, an Aberdeen-based gas production company, currently employs around 150 people at its base on Justice Mill Lane.

The BBC reports that the company is looking to reshape its business, with a staff consultation now under way.

Any redundancies, along with the closure of the firm's current office, are expected to take place at the end of the year.

The consultation plans include separating the firm into two organisations, including a new Aberdeen-based development company which would employ around 50 people and would be based at a smaller office in the city.

The BBC reports that the Aberdeen company would be involved in supporting a Morecambe carbon storage project.

The other company is expected to be based in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, England, where it would manage fields in the East Irish Sea.

A statement from Spirit Energy said: "We have shared with colleagues a proposal to restructure our UK organisation, separating into two independent organisations.

"Our structure must change to ensure our resources and personnel are where they are needed to support our activities.

"We are committed to supporting all our colleagues throughout the consultation process."
