LEE Anderson was left fuming as he was repeatedly heckled while struggling to put a question to the Deputy Prime Minister in the Commons.

The Reform UK MP was heckled by someone on the bench behind him as he tried to make his point to David Lammy, who was filling in at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday while Keir Starmer is in China.

The Ashfield MP said: “It was reported on the TV yesterday that the Labour backbenches are revolting. Now that is a matter of opinion. Unlike the backbenchers and the Prime Minister…”

Someone in the chamber could be heard saying: “You don’t have a TV licence. Where’s your TV licence?”

At this point a visibly annoyed Anderson was told to sit down by the Speaker.

Lindsay Hoyle said: “I didn’t want to have to get up. One of us is going to have to sit down, it’s not going to be me.

“Who was the person that was speaking out then? If you haven’t got the guts to admit to shouting somebody down, leave the chamber.”

To a quieter chamber, Anderson went on: “Unlike the Prime Minister of our country, I’ve never been thrown out or barred from a pub and after yesterday’s disastrous announcement to save our pubs, it’s no wonder he’s cleared off to China.

“But I’ve got one question for the Deputy Prime Minister, will he come with me to Ashfield to visit some pubs and speak to some landlords and explain to them why over 500 pubs have closed since [the] Labour Government came into power and why another 500 pubs will close in the next year? Come on, be a man.”

Lammy replied: “I think I once campaigned with [him] when he was a member of the Labour Party. And it’s been said of him that when he left he enhanced the IQ of the Labour Party and the IQ of the party that he went to.

“I wonder what job [he] is pitching for on Reform’s shadow cabinet. They’ve got Nadhim Zahawi to advise on tax, the member for Newark to open up the borders, now they need Liz Truss to crash the economy.”

Anderson left Labour for the Conservatives and later defected to Reform.
