Liz Truss backs Twitter/X as replacement for the BBC

The former prime minister quoted a post from billionaire owner Elon Musk , where he claimed Twitter/X is now the “number one source of news on Earth”.

Truss wrote: “X is the future, BBC is the past.”

Her comments come amid a crisis at the BBC, which is facing legal action from Donald Trump after it was found that journalists had spliced together footage to appear as though Trump pledged to “fight like hell” with those involved in the January 6 riots in the US.

She was panned in the replies, with one user writing: “I hope you can advise our next right wing prime minister on how not to get eliminated by the civil service.”

Another added: “For all the quality drama and nature documentary programmes that X makes? I’m not sure you’ve thought this through, again!”

Others joked about her brief stint in Number 10 and referenced a livestream by the Daily Star, where a head of lettuce was placed side-by-side with a picture of Truss following the crisis sparked by her mini-Budget in September 2022.

Users said it was “no wonder the lettuce lasted longer” and “lettuce see how this turns out”, with another adding: “You’re the past and lettuce is the present and future.”

Truss became the shortest serving prime minister in history, exiting the post after just 49 days.

Twitter/X has been subject to fierce criticism since Musk purchased the platform in 2022. Former CEO Linda Yaccarino was forced to step down in July after its AI feature, Grok, called itself “MechaHitler” and posted a series of antisemitic tweets.

Most recently, the AI was forced to publicly apologise to SNP MP Pete Wishart after posting a defamatory statement in which Wishart was labelled a “rape enabler”.
