AN EXTRA service in the morning rush will help passengers get from Prestonpans into Edinburgh.
ScotRail’s new timetable comes into effect on June 2 and will see the introduction of an additional service to what is currently on offer from the county station.
Complaints have regularly been made about the cramped conditions on trains during the busy morning services as people head into the capital for work.
On occasion, the demand has proven so great that people have been left on the platform.
The issue was also raised in the Scottish Parliament.
Now, a new service will leave Prestonpans Railway Station at 8.05am – just six minutes before the existing service from North Berwick calls at the busy station.
Across the country, there will be almost 100 additional services each weekday.
Changes also include an increase in the number of carriages, but not services, from four to six on services connecting North Berwick and Edinburgh at weekends.
Currently, 21 services take place on a Saturday and a further 13 on a Sunday from North Berwick into Edinburgh.
Heading the other way, there will also remain 19 services on a Saturday and a further 13 on a Sunday.
No changes to the 10 services on offer from East Linton into Edinburgh are listed.
Scott Prentice, ScotRail strategic planning director, felt the changes would benefit a lot of people.
He said: “This is a fantastic timetable change for our customers, delivering improvements across the country, including almost 100 additional services each day and thousands of extra seats.
“Public consultations play an active part in helping to decide what our future timetables look like, and we continue to do everything we can to look at ways of making rail an even more attractive mode of transport.
“It is an exciting time for Scotland’s Railway with the historic reopening of Levenmouth, passenger numbers continuing to grow, and significant investment in recruitment across the business.
“Everyone at ScotRail is working hard to deliver a safe, reliable, and sustainable rail service that provides a positive experience for our customers.”
