THE Basque’s pro-independence party is celebrating achieving its best ever election result.

EH Bildu secured 27 seats - tying with PNV, the centrist Basque Nationalist Party - and 32.16% of the vote in a historic result in regional elections.

The party – which now has six more seats than in 2020 - improved its results by almost 100,000 votes in the three provinces of the Basque Autonomous Community, securing victory in Araba and Gipuzkkoa and obtaining 350,000 votes in total.

The regional branch of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ party (PSOE), took 12 seats and 14.2% of the vote, while the conservative People’s Party (PP) finished fourth with seven seats and 9.2% of the vote.

EH Bildu claimed the result was a turning point and proof of its broadening appeal to Basque voters.

Pello Otxandiano, its candidate for regional president, said. “The political map has changed. The change is under way and it is unstoppable.”

EH Bildu added: “These results consolidate EH Bildu's positive trend in every recent election and confirm our hypothesis: the change of cycle in Euskal Herria is a reality. The political map has changed, and we are in a new political phase.”

The party said the popular vote had returned a Parliament that is overwhelmingly socialist and progressive, confirming “the willingness of Basque society to take a step forward for greater levels of self-governance and to deliver progressive public policies in sectors like health, education, and housing.

“With these results, the Basque pro-independence left (EH Bildu and EH Bai) establishes itself as the leading political force in the country, both north and south, with popular support that exceeds 420,000 votes,” EH Bildu said.
