The driver of the Toyota did not stop at the scene, officers said, and the vehicle was located shortly afterwards in Deacon Road.

It is said the car had been reported stolen from an address in Newcombe Road, Southampton, between 5.30pm on March 13 and 4.15pm on March 15.

It was then discovered that the vehicle had been linked to an assault and theft of vacuums at Currys/PC World at Hedge End retail park on March 14 and 15, according to the police, as well as a theft of flooring and electric showers from B&Q in Hedge End on March 15.

James, of Harborough Road in Southampton, was arrested following CCTV enquiries.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Southampton Crown Court on April 26.
