PLANS have been lodged to build a new hotel above Wetherspoons in Scotland’s capital.

The proposals, submitted to Edinburgh City Council, would see the first, second and third floors of The Standing Order on George Street converted into a 25-bed hotel.

If approved, applicant JD Wetherspoon says minor work would be undertaken to repair, restore and upgrade existing windows.

This would include the removal of the modern fabric of the building and some new partition walls.

On the first floor, demolition works have been proposed to entirely remove a toilet block built in the original location of a bedroom.

A planning statement says: “The most notable changes are noted as the removal of the modern toilet block as well as three wall openings which are not regarded as contentious.”
There are no proposed external changes to the building due to the historic nature of the site and The Scottish Sun reports that it’s understood the pub will still continue to operate as normal.

A statement on behalf of the applicant says: “In summary, the proposed works have been thoroughly considered to ensure that the least impact is made to the heritage asset, instead the proposal has considered itself as a contribution to the significance of the asset.

“All works within the building are careful to not intervene with the significant architectural details that make up the character of the building interior.

“Both the client and project team are excited to deliver the project which we believe to be a strong positive contribution to the cultural legacy of Edinburgh’s New Town, in as much as Edinburgh’s tourism industry.”
