ONE of the bridges over the river Clyde in central Glasgow was closed off while more than 100 emergency responders took part in a training simulation of a school bus crashing into the water.

Staff from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, HM Coastguard, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and the Glasgow Humane Society all took part in the exercise, which also saw key roads in the city closed off.

Glasgow City Council confirmed that the entirety of Albert Bridge – as well as roads such as Saltmarket, Crown Street, and Greendyke Street – would be closed from 6am until 7pm on March 13 for the exercise to take place.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said ahead of the simulation: “A training exercise involving firefighters and other emergency services will be taking place on Wednesday, March 13 at Albert Bridge, Glasgow.

“We will be visible on the River Clyde. Do not be alarmed if you see a high level of activity in the area.”

Photos from the scene, taken by The National's photographer Colin Mearns, show emergency responders taking part in car collision drills, as well as a simulation of a school bus crashing into the Clyde.
