A MAJOR police investigation has been launched after “burned human remains” were found near a football pitch in North Lanarkshire.

It is understood the human remains were found in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell at around 9am on Saturday.

The area was then sealed off by police and a white tent erected on the football pitch.

The death is currently being treated as "unexplained". 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9am on Saturday, February 24, 2024 a body was discovered in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell.

“Officers are at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing”.
