SCOTS singer Annie Lennox called for a ceasefire during her performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards in an emotional tribute to Sinead O’Connor.

The Eurythmics singer sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” as a tribute to O’Connor during the In Memoriam segment of the awards ceremony on Sunday night. At the end, she proclaimed: “Artists for ceasefire!”

Lennox then added: "Peace in the world".

Rolling Stone said it was the "most Sinead possible Sinead tribute", while social media users commended the action.

One wrote: "Sinead would never let you pretend this evening is allowed to exist without politics. That 'artists for ceasefire' call right at the end."

In 2014, O'Connor refused to play in Israel as an act of protest against the state's treatment of Palestinians.

She said: "Let’s just say that, on a human level, nobody with any sanity, including myself, would have anything but sympathy for the Palestinian plight".

Lennox's plea comes after more than 27,000 people have been killed by Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The latest death toll reflects an increase of 1100 since the ICJ’s verdict in the Hague last month, after South Africa lodged a case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

The death toll does not distinguish between civilian and combatant deaths but around 70% of those killed are estimated to be women and children, according to the UN.

Lennox delivered the cover of O'Connor's signature hit with eye makeup portraying a single tear, similar to that of the song’s iconic music video.

O'Connor, a seven-time Grammy Award winner, was found unresponsive in her home in London on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56.
