NEWLY released images have shown a critically endangered chimpanzee celebrating her fourth birthday at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) shared the adorable images of Masindi, one of 15 chimps, who live in the zoo’s award-winning Budongo Trail, one of the world’s most innovative chimpanzee enclosures.

Keepers at the charity helped the youngest member of the troop to celebrate with presents filled with the animal’s favourite treats.

Born on February 3, 2020, Masindi shares her name with the nearest town to the Budongo Conservation Field Station (BCFS) in Uganda, where RZSS has funded vital efforts to protect chimpanzees in the Budongo forest since 2005.

The news comes after a Japanese macaque monkey was rescued after spending five days roaming the Highlands after escaping from the Highland Wildlife Park.

The monkey, named Honshu, does not appear to have lost any weight and appears to have eaten “quite a lot of peanuts” during his time in the wild, RZSS said.

A search had to be launched on Sunday after the monkey found a way out of his enclosure at the park near Kingussie.

He was eventually caught on Thursday after a member of the public spotted him snacking at a bird feeder in a garden in the area.
