A YELLOW weather warning has been issued with areas in the Highlands to see heavy rain over the weekend.

More than 120mm of rain is expected to hit the west coast, with around 170mm predicted by The Met Office to hit parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.

Around 40 to 75mm has been forecast for the north west, including Ullapool, Portree, Tobermory and Fort William.

The warning is set to come into force at 6pm on Sunday until 9pm on Monday. The 27 hours of rainfall follows high winds in the region, named Storm Ingunn by the the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Scots have been told to expect some flooding to homes and businesses and "a slight chance of delays" or cancellations to train and bus services

Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and there is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.

The warning shared by the Met Office states: “A lengthy period of rain looks likely to develop across parts of western Scotland on Sunday and Monday.

“Initially, rain will slowly push north through Sunday, before pivoting and then returning south later on Monday.

“Some southern parts of the warning area may see a drier interlude for a time on Monday and there is some uncertainty as to how far north the rain gets.

“40-75 mm of rain may fall quite widely in the warning area, but there is potential for 120-170 mm in the wettest areas, this perhaps most likely in parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.”
