A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched to raise money for a statue of Scotland’s “greatest socialist”.

The John Maclean Statue Campaign is aiming to raise around £50,000 in a bid to create a “life-sized statue of John Maclean”.

It is hoped the statue could be commissioned and erected in Glasgow city centre with a current fundraising target of £48,480.

The schoolteacher and revolutionary socialist Maclean (below) was one of Scotland’s most important socialists and a number of events were held to mark 100 years since his death last year.

The National: John Maclean

He played an important role in the Red Clydeside movement and was an early supporter of Scottish independence.

A statement on the crowdfunding campaign’s website explains that the total funds sought for the project is £58,480 but that it has already received a generous donation of £10,000 from a Maclean supporter who “wished to remain anonymous”.

“Consequently the John Maclean Statue Campaign is appealing for donations large and small, as well as supporters sharing the project to make others aware of the initiative, and encouraging people to pledge their support for this most worthy campaign,” a statement said.

“We wish to thank each and every one of you who donate and support the project.”

So far, more than £1300 has been raised and a link to the donation page can be found HERE.

A number of people commented on the page to show their support with one saying a statue of Maclean was “long overdue” while another added: “Should have been done years ago. Let’s hope you get enough good luck and thank you.”

“Great idea – best of luck with this campaign,” said another while somebody else commented: “Hard to believe there isn’t a statue of him already. A shining light.”

“This is such a worthwhile cause and I hope that John Maclean’s message reaches all people – remember his name.”
