CONSTITUENTS in the Scottish Borders gave their MP pictures of children killed in Palestine at a protest outside his surgery.

On Friday afternoon, more than 30 pro-Palestine demonstrators came together in Peebles to protest outside Conservative MP David Mundell’s bi-monthly surgery in the town.

The action was organised by Borders Palestine Solidarity Group who formed in December. Members recently held a candlelight vigil where the names and stories of health workers were read out in Galashiels.

One constituent who visited his surgery said: “I handed him pictures of some of the children killed in Gaza and I read a poem as he looked through them. I wanted him to see those children, as I imagine he doesn’t look at them at all.”

The group previously held a vigil at Christmas and branded Mundell’s failure to support a ceasefire as “shameful”.

The action came after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent genocide in Palestine.

The court – which stopped short of ordering a ceasefire – said Israel must ensure its forces do not commit genocide and ensure preservation of evidence of alleged genocide.

Also on Friday, the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run enclave said more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed, The ministry does not differentiate between combatants and civilians in its death toll but has said about two-thirds of those killed were women and children.

Mundell has been contacted for comment.
