ARMED police shot a dog dead after it hospitalised two men in an attack in a Scottish town.

Officers were called to the Tinto View area of Hamilton on Tuesday evening after reports of a “large bulldog-type dog” attacking a man.

The man was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment for “life-threatening injuries”, police said.

Armed officers were deployed to the scene “due to the dog being dangerously out of control”.

Police said the dog attempted to attack an officer and was “shot dead by armed police”.

A second man was also attacked by the same dog shortly before that incident, which was reported at around 5pm.

The first attack happened on Loudonhill Avenue and the victim was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Superintendent Steven Espie said: “This was a distressing incident for those involved. I would like to reassure the local community that this was a contained incident and there is no further risk to the public.

“There will be a continued police presence in the area while our enquiries continue.

“Enquiries are also ongoing to establish the breed of the dog.”

Police said that because a firearm was discharged during the response to this incident, the circumstances will be referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Although the breed of the dog has not been confirmed, there have been moves to ban American Bully XLs after a spate of attacks across the UK.
