A SCOTTISH town has been named among the top places in Europe for a “quiet romantic getaway” alongside places in Italy, Greece and France.

According to research carried out by travel experts at Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Lerwick in Shetland is among the six best towns to spend a romantic holiday.

When putting together its list, researchers analysed thousands of Tripadvisor ratings to uncover the hidden hotspots off the beaten track that consistently earn the highest praise from visitors.

The capital town of Shetland, Lerwick is home to a significant number of the archipelago’s population.

There is plenty to see and do with many of its attractions revolving around its fascinating history, including the Shetland Museum and Archives.

The town is also due to host the annual Lerwick Up Helly Aa fire festival – a spectacle which celebrates history through fire, food and costumes.
