AN animal sanctuary has rescued the "smallest grey seal pup it has ever seen".

The seal pup was found on a beach in Shetland on Thursday morning by a dog walker.

The walker was climbing up a beach towards St Ninian's Isle when they saw the injured animal.

After it was transported to Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, staff weighed the female and were shocked to find it was only 9kg in weight.

The National:

Inspector Vhairi Graham with the Scottish Society for Protection of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) attended to the pup on the beach and would several small wounds. It is believed birds had pecked the seal's face, body and flippers.

Staff at the sanctury named the pup Lulu, and she is believed to by around three or four weeks old.

The sanctuary posted on Facebook: “She is lucky to have been found in time and is now in desperate need of fattening up.

“We have started her on a course of antibiotics and are tube feeding her fish porridge to start with before moving her on to fish pieces shortly. Fingers crossed she thrives in our care.”
