However, some local authority areas reported less than one in five schools which have a defibrillator, with one council reporting just 4% of its schools having access.

South Lanarkshire (7%), East Renfrewshire (12%), Dumfries and Galloway (13%), Fife (15%), Moray (16%) and South Ayrshire (19%) were some of the areas which reported the lowest amount of schools with a defibrillator.

Shetland Council reported that just one (4%) of its schools has a defibrillator, which was not funded by the council but by Scottish charity Lucky2Bhere.

The only other local authorities reporting more than half of its schools have a defibrillator are Orkney (74%) and Angus (54%).

No information was held for Dundee City, East Lothian, Glasgow, Midlothian or North Ayrshire councils.

Highland Council only held data for high schools and so was not included in the overall data. Of 32 high schools in the area, 22 (69%) have a defibrillator. There was no data for primary schools or additional support needs (ASN) schools for this area.

The data was gathered from Freedom of Information requests submitted by the Scottish Conservatives, who said the results reflected the Scottish Government’s “shameful neglect of Scottish schools”.
