A CONFUSED crowd has gathered in Glasgow's George Square as the festive event Winterfest did not open on time.

The Glasgow city centre event was scheduled to open its doors on Saturday and according to their Facebook page, it is now open.

However, those who turned up at 4pm today were disappointed as the fence remained up and staff were seen inside "laying carpets and moving stuff around".

An eyewitness told the Glasgow Times: "It very much isn't open. There is a huge crowd at the entrance, waiting. They are still laying carpets and moving stuff around.

"It doesn't look like it's going to open any time soon."

On Facebook, where the company announced the market is now open, multiple people have noted that they are surprised.

One person said: "Umm, no they're not? You're still building stuff and the gates are shut."
Another added: "Gates are not open folks. They seem to have a bit of work to go before opening. Can’t understand why you would state yous are open."

Organisers M&N Events were contacted for comment.
