But the winner in Scotland, Knockinaam in Dumfries and Galloway, was chosen because of its “knock-out position” on a private cove where the road ends and the Irish Sea begins. It also has an “unstuffy, relaxed air” with superb rooms (below) and a daily changing menu of local specialities at its restaurant.

The National:

Sian Ibbotson of Knockinaam, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen for a César award. David and I are very lucky to do something we love and are supported by a fantastic team who care.

"After over 39 years in the industry and 20 years being the custodians of Knockinaam Lodge, we’ve been doing our own thing with sustainability, food & service throughout this time. Many of our guests have found us via The Good Hotel Guide, and keep returning.”

The 10 new entries in Scotland are Mingary Castle, Burnside Cottage By Wick, Summer Isles Ullapool, Royal Marine Hotel Brora, Bridgend Hotel, The Kirkwall Hotel, Isle of Mull Hotel, Foyers Lodge, Lundies House and No 17 The Promenade.
