A FIRE at a substation in Inverness has caused a number of power cuts across the city.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Waterloo Place around 3.30am on Friday.

The Inverness Vaccination Centre inside the Eastgate Shopping Centre had to close with all appointments cancelled.

Elsewhere, the Inverness Justice Centre has been closed to the public with a statement saying there will be no power available until at least 6pm tonight.

Eastgate Shopping Centre said several stores and its Falcon Car Park would be shut until SSE could fix the problem.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said a fault cut the power to 2800 properties in the city centre in the early hours of the morning.

An update from the company said: “We have restored over 2600 properties and 150 customers remain affected, including areas around Castle St and Bridge St and parts of Millburn Road.

“We will continue to restore power in stages throughout the course of today but due to the need for underground works, some customers who are close to the fault area may be without power into late afternoon or early evening. We’re proactively contacting customers affected.

“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience caused as we work to restore power and would encourage any customers with concerns to contact us on the power cut helpline, 105 or send us a message.”
