An Ayrshire town has been named among the most expensive seaside resorts in the UK in a new list compiled by a hotel comparison website.

Ayr was named the 16th most expensive in the country with only one other Scottish seaside resort making the list.

The research compared 30 seaside resorts across Britain and looked at the average daily rate for each of the destination's cheapest available double rooms in a hotel or guest house with at least three stars.

The average rate in Ayr was found to be £87 per day with Oban in Argyll and Bute coming in at 6th with an average price of £121.
