WITH the UCI World Cycling Championships getting underway in Scotland, people across the country have been warned to expect road closures for the event.

Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop has said that the Scottish Government has worked closely with organisers, Police Scotland and local authorities and others to test travel arrangements.

Here’s everything you need to know about the road closures.

Glasgow

The city centre is the area where the most disruption can be expected, especially on days with road races – August 5, 6, 8, 12 and 13.

Closures will come into effect from 00.01 on Friday August 4 until 23.59 on Tuesday August 8.

Closures will then come into effect once more from 00.01 on Saturday August 12 until 23.59 on Sunday August 13.

Road closures for the Mixed Team Time Trial Relay will commence from 00.01am from August 4 until 11.59pm August 8.

On Friday August 4, the Gran Fondo road races in Perthshire will involve the full closure of the A85 between Perth and Methven.

Edinburgh 

Road closures vary in length in the capital from 20 minutes on Sunday August 6 while other roads were close for 15 hours across Saturday evening and into Sunday afternoon. 

Which roads are closed overnight? 

  • Queen's Drive, Horse Wynd and Dukes Walk will close at 6.30pm on August 5 and reopen on August 6 at 12pm.
  • New Street will shut from midnight on August 5 until 1.45pm on August 6
  • Several sections of the Royal Mile will be shut at varios times. The Canongate will be shut from midnight on Saturday until 1.45pm on Sunday. 
  • The High Street will be closed between midnight on Saturday and 11.15am on Sunday between South Bridge and Bank Street with the section between St Mary's Street and South Bridge reopening at 12pm.

What about roads closed on Sunday?

  • Abbeyhill will close on Sunday between 8am and 9.45am between Canongate and Abbeyhill Crescent. 
  • George IV Bridge will close between Lawnmarket and Victoria Street between 9am and 9.45am. 
  • Bank Street and North Bank Street will also be closed during these times. 
  • There will be no access to the Mound on Sunday August 6 between 9am and 9.45am.
  • As competitors make their way to Stockbridge, Queen Street Gardens East will close between 9am and 9.45am.
  • Heriot Row will be closed from 9am for 45 minutes between Dundas Street and Howe Street. 
  • Howe Street will also close from 9am to 9.45am between Heriot Row and South-East Circus place.
  • North West Circus Place, South East Circus Place and Circus Place will close on Sunday for 45 minutes from 9am onwards. 
  • Kerr Street will shut between 9.10am and 9.45am. As the race continues, Raeburn Place will close between 9.10am and 9.45am. 
  • Road closurses from Raeburn Place will continue through Comely Bank Road while Craighleith Road will also shut from 9.10am to 9.45am. 
  • Hillhouse Road will be closed to traffic between 9.15am and 9.50am. 
  • Road closures on Queensferry Road vary as competitors make their way towards the Queensferry Crossing. 
  • The road will shut between 9.15am and 9.50am between Craigleith Road and Hillhouse Road.

The section between the dual carriageway (A90 South-eastbound) and Whitehouse Road will shut from 9.40am to 10am. 

From 9.40am to 10.40am, the A90 North-westvound will be closed between Maybury Road and the boundary of City of Edinburgh Council. 

Scottish borders

The council has insisted that disruption to communities and businesses is being minimised although there will still be some impact in the Scottish Borders.

On August 6 for the Mountain Bike Cross-country marathon, the following roads will be shut: 

  • Location 1: B7062 and B709 at Traquair House : B7062 from the entrance to Traquair House to the junction of the B709 (8.30am to 10am) and B709 from the junction with the B7062 for approximately 450m southwards (8.45am to 11.45am)
  • Location 2: D83/1 and D83/2 Ashiestiel to Walkerburn Times: 10am to 12.30pm: D83/1 and D83/2 closed between Ashiestiel and the junction of the D80/1 south of Walkerburn (junction beyond the bridge)
  • Location 3: Caberston Road, Walkerburn and D80/1 to junction of Ashiestiel road: Times: 10.30am to 1.30pm: Caberston Road and the D80/1 south of Walkerburn closed between the junction with the A72 and the D83/1
  • Location 4: B709 Granites Road, beyond Innerleithen Golf Club Times: 11am to 3pm: B709 from Innerleithen Golf Club northwards to Leithen Lodge
  • B7062 from entrance to Traquair House to the B709
  • B709 from B7062 southwards for approximately 450m
  • D83/1 from the D80/1 south of Walkerburn to the D83/2
  • D83/2 from the D83/1 to Ashiestiel Caberston Road, Walkerburn
  • D80/1 from Caberston Road, Walkerburn to the D83/1
  • B709 from Innerleithen Golf Club northwards to Leithen Lodge
  • The Neidpath car park will be closed from 6am on 9 August to 11.59pm on 12 August
