THE Hebridean Baker’s recipe for success is continuing with his appointment as author-in-residence at the largest gathering of Scottish clans in the world.

Coinneach MacLeod, whose social media content has reached 26 million people across the world, has been invited to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in the US, which will see around 30,000 visitors over the weekend.

It follows MacLeod’s second sell-out North American book tour, which took in Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago and Toronto. He finished the fortnight on the Canadian bestsellers list.

Today he is back in Scotland speaking at Glasgow’s Aye Write Book Festival, then will travel to North Carolina in July to share his recipes, stories and a few Gaelic songs at Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. In between the sheep herding, caber tossing, Highland dancing and clan tug of war, he will also be hosting his own Hebridean Baker cèilidhs.

MacLeod told the Sunday National he was delighted to be going.

“I can’t wait to don my MacLeod kilt and head to the North Carolina mountains,” he said. “Having the opportunity to travel across the world and talk about Hebridean traditions, Highland recipes and Scottish culture means the world to me.

“Sharing the weekend with 30,000 folk who are as passionate about Scotland as I am will be a dream.”

MacLeod’s Hebridean Baker shortbread and oaties biscuits, made in partnership with Stag Bakeries on the Isle of Lewis, will officially go on sale in the US at the Games.

“To think folk will be able to buy my whisky, marmalade and Heather Honey Shortbreads in the US is so exciting,” he said.

MacLeod added that the support he had received on his trips to the US from resident Scots, particularly islanders, was “unbelievable”.

“I love meeting them and on the latest tour I signed over 2000 copies of my cookbook My Scottish Island Kitchen,” he said.

While MacLeod is in the US, he will travel from Grandfather Mountain to Greenville, South Carolina, then to Provincetown, Massachusetts, for book events before returning to the UK for the National Geographic Food Festival in London.

Born and raised on the island of Lewis, he is inspired by family recipes, traditional baking and Scottish flavours and showcases the Scottish islands through his stories, dishes and adventures with his partner Pàdruig and their West Highland Terrier Sèoras.

MacLeod was Scotland’s best-selling cookbook author in 2021 and 2022 with his two cookbooks, Recipes and Wee Stories from the Scottish Islands and My Scottish Island Kitchen.

His third cookbook is due out in October.
