A TORY MP has been mocked after saying he remembers “swimming in sewage” during his childhood.
It comes as water companies in England have apologised for repeated sewage spills and pledged to invest £10bn this decade in a bid to calm public anger over pollution in seas and rivers.
Speaking to Robert Peston, Tory MP for Ashford Damian Green said the issue was not really prevalent in his constituency as it does not have a coastline.
However, he added: “I’m not denying that it is a big issue but it always has been. I remember as a child in south Wales swimming in sewage.

“Jackson’s Bay in Barry used to be a sewage outlet where we all went and paddled and swam and it was sort of regarded as acceptable. It wasn’t acceptable.”
Many took to Twitter to mock Green for his comments with one joking: “Swimming in raw sewage isn’t what it used to be.”
Professor Brian Cox also took aim at Green, writing on his own social media: “You were lucky. I had to get up in the morning at ten o’clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.
“And you try tell the young people of today that… they won’t believe you.”
Another added: “I’m not sure ‘I used to swim in s**t, so you should happily swim in s**t’ is the winning argument that Damian Green thinks it is.”

Somebody else said it resembled a “Monty Python sketch” more than it did a political interview.
“He shouldn’t be in politics. Nor should any other Tory be”, another Twitter user added.
