A GANG of teenagers sparked a manhunt in a Scottish town after playing chappy at a sick elderly person’s home.

An Ardrossan man – who wished to remain anonymous – said the gang of five boys smashed a window in his grandmother’s home after repeatedly banging on it.

Police were called to the scene on Sunday evening and the man said they spent around half an hour tracking down the louts before they were caught at Ardrossan Academy.

The force said the boys were let off with a verbal warning from officers.

The man told The National police shut down a grassy area near the North Ayrshire school and that 16 officers were involved in the search.

He said: “When it first happened, it was around about 7pm and it’s my grans house that we were at, so it was me, my dad and my gran because unfortunately she has an illness at the moment.

“The door goes and we check and see a group of five boys, and they weren’t young, they were around 14 to 15 run away.

“My dad gets out, we have a look and we can’t seem to find them. He’s still looking, I’m making sure she’s okay and around about 10 minutes later, they come back and bang on the door, there’s four of them banging on the door and one of them banged repeatedly on the window.

“One of the windows had smashed that they banged on and so we had to call the police.

“Eventually a police van found them outside Ardrossan Academy, found them outside there, all five of them.”

A police spokesperson said: “Officers became aware of a disturbance in the Greenacres area of Ardrossan shortly after 8.10pm on Sunday, April 30.

“A group of youths were traced in the area and given a warning by officers.

“No further complaints were made at the time but anyone wishing to report anything further can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 3351 of April 30.”
