AN Edinburgh resident was left shocked when he saw black smoke coming from underneath the pavement on a busy road.

Guy Cheung was in his living room in Morningside when he heard what sounded like a mobile phone vibrating.

He discovered that it was in fact coming from outside his home and when he looked out he noticed smoke coming from underneath the pavement slabs outside of a Pizza Hut on Morningside Road.

It is thought the fire caused a partial blackout for residents on the street.

Cheung told Edinburgh Live: “I was in the living room and heard a noise similar to a mobile phone vibrating on a table.

“It took me a while to realise it was actually outside and that is when I saw the fire. “Emergency services arrived fairly quickly. I’m glad no one got hurt, and that people worked through the night to have power restored for a couple of buildings around here who had been blacked out.

“The fire service arrived only five minutes or so after I shot the video. A bit of drama in otherwise sleepy Morningside.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.48pm on Saturday, 25 March to reports of an electrical fire in Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the city's Morningside Road, where firefighters worked to support their partners and make the area safe before leaving the scene."
