A GERMAN MP has come out in support of a second Scottish independence referendum with a heart-warming message.

Erhard Grundl – who has been an MP since 2017 – said he supported Scots to decide on their own future ahead of a Yes march in Berlin.

The Alliance 90/Greens politician outlined his support in a greeting sent to Germans for Scottish Independence ahead of its march in Berlin last weekend, which he was unable to attend in person.

Grundl also highlighted the push for Scotland to return to the EU after being dragged out of the bloc against its will.

He said: “I thank you friends of Germans for Scottish Independence as I know, one of the main driving forces behind your work is the desire that Scotland remains an integral part of European unity and that Brexit was a big mistake.

“Let me say it clear, that I support your aim to be given the opportunity to decide on your future yourself.

“As a German MP that works in the field of culture, I want to also pick up the chance to pay tribute to such wonderful Scottish contributors to our worldwide cultural heritage: the voice of Rod Stewart, Lesley Banks‘ paintings and the goals of Kenny Dalglish to name just three.

“Long live Scotland. Thank you very much.”

Dozens of Yessers gathered at the Brandenburg Gate on Saturday to march past the British Embassy and onto Alexanderplatz in support of Scotland’s right to self-determination.

The march and rally – the first for three years in the German capital - was attended by Alba MP Neale Hanvey and Scottish singer-songwriter Kevin Gore.

Demonstrations were planned in both 2020 and 2021 but both had to be postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.

Co-organiser Colin Macpherson – who is originally from Scotland but now lives in Straubing in Lower Bavaria – said Brexit was what made many Germans more aware of the independence movement in Scotland.
