THE SNP have laid out the “election-based options” for holding a de facto referendum on Scottish independence, which are set to be debated at the party’s Special Democracy Conference in March.
They include fighting the next UK General Election as a de facto referendum on Scottish independence or waiting to hold a de facto referendum at the next Scottish Parliament elections due to be held in 2026.
The SNP could also choose to contest the next General Election as a mandate for being granted a Section 30 order, which would allow the Scottish Government to hold an officially sanctioned indyref2 in the future.
However, there are also those calling for more immediate action.
The SNP MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Angus MacNeil, wants Holyrood to dissolve parliament this year in order to hold a de facto referendum without the need to wait for the next UK General Election, which could come as late as 2025.
Figures in the Alba Party have also called for the de facto referendum to be held “on home ground” with a Holyrood election, allowing both 16 and 17-year olds and European nationals to vote.
