SCOTLAND’S best building has been crowned at a prestigious annual architecture awards.
The Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award 2022, which is given out by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) went to the Quarry Studios, an office building and community cafe complex hidden within the Cairngorms National Park.
The simple building was designed by Moxon Architects on the site of a former rubbish tip, to serve the area’s scattered community and the park’s tourists.
The award jury was chaired by architect Amin Taha, who said Quarry Studios was praised for being a “high quality and tactile building” with lots of detail, alongside a broader social aim.
“Moxon Architects have designed a building that is highly sustainable – not only in terms of its carbon footprint and support for local biodiversity, but also in how it acts as a catalyst for supporting local businesses and its community,” he added.
Quarry Studios overcame competition from four other buildings to win the award. These were Forth Valley College – Falkirk Campus, High Sunderland, Galashiels, Jedburgh Grammar Campus and Lockerbie Sawmill by Konishi Gaffney.
