A PITCH invader has taken the field waving an LGBT+ flag during Portugal and Uruguay’s World Cup match.
The intruder ran onto the pitch at around the 51st minute of the match, causing a temporary stop to play.
This year’s World Cup in Qatar has courted controversy over the host nation's human rights record and treatment of LGBT+ people – with homosexuality being illegal in the country.
Images have shown that the man was also wearing a T-shirt displaying messages of support for Ukraine, which is suffering from the Russian invasion, and Iranian women, who are campaigning for more civil liberties under their state's regime.
The incident caused a stir on Twitter with several users praising the activist.
One person tweeted: "The first time I’ve ever approved of an intruder on the pitch."

While the controversy over the event's inclusivity has been widely discussed across the media, a Tory MP recently complained that the BBC's coverage of the tournament was too "woke" and moaned that viewers were being "lectured to".
