The cost-of-living crisis sweeping the UK has had a major impact on Glasgow businesses and many were forced to close due to rising inflation, soaring energy costs, increasing food prices and most recently, the crash of the pound.
Businesses struggled over two years of lockdown measures and the economic crises sadly drove many to shut their doors for good.
Here is a list of the 11 businesses which closed for the reasons above and other reasons:
Guido’s Fish and Chips on Coulstonholm Road
Loyal customers were sad at the closure of this “chippie of choice”.
The owner told The Glasgow Times: “due to the high rise of bills and high rent we weren’t able to keep up with our costs.”

Outwith Books on Albert Road
The independent bookstore announced the closure on social media, saying the decision was down to trade being “too uncertain”.

Patisserie Valerie in Glasgow Central Station
The coffee and pastry shop closed after announcing it didn’t recover “as well as expected” following the pandemic.

Stefano’s Fish and Chips in Drumchapel
The chippy announced to customers and locals that it would be closing because of the increase in the cost of living, especially rising energy costs.

Atelier Candle Company
This Glasgow-based small business sold candles and wax melts online but was forced to cease trading.
The owner made an announcement on social media describing how the company was “barely breaking even.”

Scran on Alexandra Parade
The popular Dennistoun eatery announced on social media that it would close due to the “current climate” with a “truly heavy heart.”

Co-op on Union Street
The reason for the closure was not confirmed, but our sister title The Herald previously reported the Co-op Group was to axe around 400 jobs due to tough trading conditions and “rising inflation”.

McVitie’s factory in the East End
The factory was not a shock closure, but staff were still “sad to see it go.”
The company that owned the factory said it was based on “a comprehensive business analysis.”

Globe Café on Paisley Road West
This café announced its closure after “18 wonderful years” and received an outpouring of kind words from its loyal customers.

McFly’s Chicken in Shawlands
The popular Southside chicken shop announced its closure on social media and hopes to open a new venture “in due course.”

Baffo Pizza on Argyle Street
Hopefully not the end for the team behind Baffo, the owners hope to open a new venture.
