Former Glasgow labour group leader, Malcolm Cunning, who died earlier this month, has been shortlisted for recognition in Scotland’s councillor awards.

Mr Cunning died after a short illness on  September 4, aged 65.

He was Labour group leader from 2019- 2022 leading the party into the council elections in May where it was one seat away from taking back control of Glasgow City Council.

He was removed as leader following a contest shortly afterwards and replaced by George Redmond.

Mr Cunning is nominated in the Councillor Awards for a Lifetime Achievement Award (in memoriam).

He was a long-serving councillor and held various positions in the Labour group during his time and was a much-respected councillor, known for his eloquent contributions in the council chamber but also his humour and courtesy.

Mr Cunning is the only Glasgow councillor nominated in any of the categories.

Awards will also be given for Community Champion, resilience and recovery, and young councillor.

The award for council leader of the year will not be awarded but instead leadership across Scotland recognised.

The organiser said: “In this difficult context, we feel it is essential to take this moment in time to celebrate all local leadership across Scotland.

“As such, the Cllr Awards will be showcasing and recognising the leadership of each Council Leader in Scotland (those currently in post as well as those serving up to the May 2022 elections) for their remarkable contributions to local government over the last two years.
