THE Queen’s funeral is set to take place in London on Monday and, although retailers, supermarkets, and visitor attractions would often stay open on a bank holiday, many are set to close.

The late monarch’s lying in state at Westminster Hall ended on Monday morning with around 2000 people, including First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, expected to gather for the funeral. 

Below is a list of what is remaining open and what is not. 

Schools

All schools and nurseries will be closed for the national bank holiday. 

The Scottish Government issued guidance to all 32 councils that schools, along with all other education settings that would normally be closed on a bank holiday, should be shut.

During the rest of the national mourning period, schools have been advised to open as normal with the usual expectations in place regarding attendance. 

Supermarkets

Large branches of the biggest supermarket chains, including Tesco, Morrisons, Co-op, Marks & Spencer, Iceland, Aldi, and Waitrose will all close for the day. 

Asda has said that it will reopen from 5pm on Monday whilst smaller convenience stores and petrol station branches of Sainsbury’s and the Co-op will open up again until 10pm. 

Morrisons will reopen petrol stations from 5pm while Tesco Express stores will be open to customers from 5pm. 

Restaurants and Takeaways 

McDonald’s announced plans last week to close all of its UK shops until 5pm. 

Domino’s Pizza will be closed on Monday morning until 12pm and Pizza Hut restaurants and deliveries will restart from 2pm. 

Greggs is set to shut for the whole day, although a small number of its branches may choose to stay open. 

In terms of coffee shops, Starbucks will only temporarily close between 11am and 2pm and Caffe Nero will close from 10.45am to 2pm.

Costa Coffee will remain closed all day. All branches operated by other companies, such as those within airports or train stations, may have differing opening hours. 

In Edinburgh, the St James' Quarter shopping centre will remain closed with the exception of a few food outlets. 

Most pubs will be open all day although those operated by JD Wetherspoon may be subjected to later opening hours in certain locations, the company confirmed. 

Retailers

Most shopping centres and retail parks will remain open as normal, although individual shops will be given the option to close if they wish. 

Those confirmed to be closing include:

Others may choose to close and anyone planning on heading out should check what’s open before making their trip. 

Sport and Leisure

Cineworld, Odeon and Showcase cinemas will all be shut on Monday with no screenings offered. 

However, people will be able to attend branches of Vue to watch the funeral live and free of charge.

All Powerleague five-a-side venues will be closed throughout the day but will open from 5pm. 

All National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland properties, and those operated by Glasgow Life, will remain closed throughout the whole day.
