LIZ Truss has outlined when she will announce support to tackle rising energy bills if she is elected prime minister.
The frontrunner in the race to become the new Conservative Party leader has pledged to announce help "within one week" if elected prime minister.
Truss was quizzed about her plans on the BBC’s new flagship political programme Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
She also said that her first port of call would be to fix supply issues and sort out resources in the North Sea.
Speaking on the BBC, she said: “I understand that people are struggling with eyewatering energy bills and there are predictions of even worse down the track.
“I understand that and I can say that I will act if I’m elected as Prime Minister.
“I will act immediately on bills and on energy supply because I think those two things go hand in hand.

“We need to deal with the immediate problem. We need to help people, we need to help businesses but we also need to sort out the supply issues that have made us end up being where we are now.”
Last month, Ofgem confirmed the price cap would soar by over 80% from £1971 to £3549 from October.
The cap is due to come into place for around 24 million households on October 1 and will remain in place till December 31.
This has led to concerns that many will be left in fuel poverty, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon previously saying many families will face “destitution and devastation” as a result of the price cap rise.
In Shetland, people have been warned they could need to earn over £100,000 to avoid fuel poverty.

Kuenssberg continued to press Truss on how exactly she was going to tackle rising bills in the short term.
Truss said: “What I can say is that if I’m elected as prime minister, within one week I will make sure there is an announcement on how we are going to deal with the issue of energy bills and of long-term supply to put this country on the right footing for winter.
“That is absolutely vital.”
Either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak will be announced as the new prime minister on Monday.
