A TORY leadership hustings event is scheduled to take place in Perth - the only such event in Scotland.

It will see Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak travel to the Fair City to debate in-front of local Conservative party members on August 16.

It is one of 12 hustings taking place across the UK between now and the end of August.

The Conservative party leadership hustings of 2019 between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt also took place in Perth.

The region was once a stronghold for the Conservative party in General Elections.

However, since 2001 SNP MP Pete Wishart has held the seat of Perth and North Perthshire (formerly North Tayside), making him Scotland’s longest serving MP currently sitting in the House of Commons.

Commenting on the city once again being chosen to host the Conservative party leadership hustings he said: “The people of Perth are distinctly unenthusiastic about the Tory leadership hustings coming to Perth for the second time in a row.

“This is the third time in five years that Scotland has had to put up with a Prime Minister being voted for by a small group of right-wing Conservative party members.

“And whichever candidate becomes Prime Minister, they will try to stop the Scottish Government from holding a referendum, despite it being elected on that mandate at last year’s election.

“The irony is, that by trying to deny that mandate, they are proving the point that that the status quo puts Scotland at a major democratic deficit and independence is the only way to resolve this.”

During the leadership hustings of 2019 pro-independence campaigners gathered outside the venue with Saltires and Yes flags.

A banner was also draped from one of Perth’s bridge’s spanning the Tay which read: “End London Rule”.

The Conservative leadership hustings will take place in London on August 31, with a winner being announced on September 5.
