THE husband of a teacher who was murdered in the Uvalde school shooting has died of a heart attack two days after his wife.

Joe Garcia died of a heart attack two days after his wife Irma was murdered by an 18-year-old gunman at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde Texas. She was one of two staff members killed in the attack.

A member of Garcia’s family confirmed his death in a tweet which said he “passed away due to grief”. The pair had four children together and had been together since they were in high school, according to Dallas News.

John Martinez, Irma Garcia’s nephew, tweeted: “PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY. God have mercy on us, this isn’t easy.

“I truly am at a loss for words for how we are feeling,”

Irma Garcia had been considered an accomplished educator at the school where she had worked for 23 years. In 2019, she was in the finals for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching, an honour given by Trinity University to outstanding teachers in the San Antonio area.

A GoFundMe page set up by Garcia's family say he died of a "broken heart".
