MARKS & Spencer is kicking off its Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations by introducing a Union-flag-covered corgi-themed caterpillar cake.

The supermarket revealed on Friday that from next Tuesday customers will be able to get their hands on two new versions of its famous Colin the Caterpillar cakes – one Connie cake inspired by the Queen herself and another based on her dogs, complete with a Union flag cape.

The news was revealed on social media with the caption: “When you thought you’d seen it all … introducing Corgi meets Jubilee Connie the Caterpillar. Pick up these limited-edition treats in store from Tuesday 17 May!”

The store’s Union flag Jubilee bunting is currently the 10th bestselling product on its site in the last 48 hours.

The products were announced after the UK Government’s Education Secretary headed to a primary school in England to mark the launch of a £12 million roll-out of books about the Queen.

The National:

The publication, commissioned by the UK Government and titled “Queen Elizabeth: A Platinum Jubilee Celebration”, is going out to all schools across England this month.

The Scottish and Welsh governments asked for schools only to receive the books on an opt-in basis. They will not be delivered until the end of September.

In London on Friday, it emerged that eight buses had been given a purple makeover to celebrate the Jubilee.

Meanwhile, Jemma Melvin’s lemon Swiss roll and amaretti trifle beat 5000 desserts to become the official pudding of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.
