THE Scottish council elections are over, and the Conservatives are the undisputed losers.

Although the result for the Tories wasn’t as bad as the “worst-case scenario” predicted by the polls, they still lost 62 seats across Scotland to return 214 councillors.

This was especially sour in Edinburgh, where the party had its worst result in 50 years, and Glasgow, where the party went down to just two councillors.

RECAP: Results announced in Scotland's crunch council votes

Labour overtook the party to gain second place, but their good result seems to have come more from Tory failure than their own success. Anas Sarwar’s party gained just 20 seats overall, matching the LibDems’ 20, although they did manage to take majority control of one council, West Dunbartonshire.

The clear winners of the day were the SNP, who managed to win 22 more seats than 2017 to return 453 councillors. They also took majority control of one council – Dundee City.

The Greens had a solid result which they will be celebrating, returning 35 councillors, including 10 in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. This was up 16 on their 2017 result.

The final tally stands at:

SNP - 453 seats (up 22)

Labour - 282 seats (up 20)

Tories - 214 seats (down 62)

Independents - 152 seats (down 16)

LibDems - 87 seats (up 20)

Greens - 35 seats (up 16)

The SNP are the largest group on 21 Scottish councils, the Tories on five, Labour on three, and independents are the largest group on three.
