SCOTTISH smoked salmon has been recognised for its excellence at one of America’s most prestigious global seafood trade shows.

Taking place in Boston on March 13, the Seafood Expo North America (SENA) awarded the Scottish Salmon Company’s Native Hebridean Smoked Scottish Salmon their "best new foodservice" prize at the 2022 Seafood Excellence Awards, which honours product leaders in the North America seafood market.

SENA is North America’s largest seafood trade event, and brings together international buyers and suppliers who operate in the American market.

The Scottish Salmon Company’s Native Hebridean fish are raised in the Hebrides and descended from North Uist wild salmon, and are hand-cured in pebble-lined kilns at the company’s Harris & Lewis smokehouse in Stornoway, using wood shavings from aged Scotch whisky barrels.

Scottish Salmon Company communications and business development director Su commented: “Native Hebridean is a truly unique product having been specially developed over more than a decade and the award win is testament to this. It offers the discerning consumer a truly Scottish delicacy with unique heritage and is fully traceable to the Hebridean islands and West Coast of Scotland. It is our Hebridean hero!”

The award follows reports earlier this year that Scottish salmon exports increased in value by 95% and 42% in volume in January, compared to the same month in 2021.

Tavish Scott, chief executive of the salmon trade body Salmon Scotland, commented: “After such a difficult economic period during Covid, and with harsh weather conditions throughout January, this demonstrates the dedication of our farmers.

“But it isn’t just about economics, as everyone in Scotland can be proud that we produce such as high-quality nutritious product with rigorous environmental and welfare standards and a low carbon footprint.”
