PRESIDENT Volodymyr Zelensky has applied for Ukraine to join the 27-nation European Union on the fifth day of the Russian invasion of his country.

It came as the first round of talks with Russia about ending the fighting in Ukraine concluded.

More talks could happen soon, an adviser to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

Meanwhile, Zelensky posted photos of himself signing the EU application, and his office says the paperwork is on its way to Brussels, where the 27-nation bloc has its headquarters.
