THE BBC’s departing Scotland editor has taken a jab at one SNP MSP before leaving to her new role in the States.

Sarah Smith, who courted controversy while reporting on Scotland after suggesting that Nicola Sturgeon was “enjoying” the pandemic and also falsely saying that Alex Salmond had called for her to step down, hit the headlines on Thursday after she criticised Scottish political culture.

Smith, who is taking on the BBC North America editor role, said that she felt relieved to be leaving the “bile, hatred and misogyny” of Scottish politics behind.

She claimed someone had wound their windows down and shouted at her to call her a “lying bitch” during her time as Scotland editor.

SNP MSP James Dornan commented on the story to say: “America would be the go-to place to escape all her imaginary woes then.”

He was condemned for the remark, and quickly offered an apology.

Dornan wrote on Twitter: “Language is important in this so I apologise for my earlier comments that made it seem as though I believed the abuse Sarah Smith has suffered was imaginary.”

In a sly jab at the SNP MSP, Smith then tweeted from her plane: “About to take off for Miami. Leaving any *woes* behind.”
