A LANGUAGE learning app which analyses the level of emotion in the human voice has found Nicola Sturgeon sounds happiest in her speeches, compared to all other UK politicians analysed in the study.

Preply, a language learning app and e-learning platform, analysed the speeches of the world’s major business and political leaders to see how they address people in public - and how their linguistic features shape the way their speeches come across.

Public figures around the world use various linguistic features to make their message impactful, inspire confidence in their words, and hone their public image.

The analysis of UK politicians found that the emotion of happiness is the most dominant of any other emotion in speeches, at a level of 37%, followed by anger, at 32%.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, sounds the happiest in her speeches in comparison to all other UK politicians analysed.

According to Preply’s research, she ranks first, with a score of 89.5 out of 100 for happiness. The happiness level of her voice is 240% happier than the average happiness level, followed by Angela Rayner, MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, at 72.1/100 and Home Secretary Priti Patel, at 70.6/100.

The National: Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, is the politician that sounds the angriest in the study. According to the AI, his anger level is 311.1% above the average.

Also featuring in the angriest list, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ranks second, at 69.3/100, followed by Chancellor Rishi Sunak at 62.4/100 and Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, at 53.5/100.

Based on an emotion recognition analysis of public speeches, UK female politicians sound happier than male politicians. Female leaders got a score of happiness of 71.9 out of 100 and men only 20 out of 100.

The highest emotion in the speeches of male politicians is anger with 41.7 out of 100 whilst women only get an anger score of 12 out of 100.
