HOLLYWOOD star Karen Gillan was the most-searched living Scottish celebrity of 2021, beating out competitors including Gerard Butler and Sam Heughan.

Search specialists Semrush crunched the numbers, analysing the most-Googled Scottish stars according to global online trends last year.

Inverness-born Gillan came in first place, with the Scottish actress boosting a filmography that includes Guardians Of The Galaxy and other MCU films, Gunpowder Milkshake and Jumanji starring The Rock.

Gerard Butler, who last year starred in Copshop, was runner-up according to the data.

He was trailed by Outlander's Sam Heughan in third place. Heughan is set to star alongside Kenobi's Ewan McGregor in Everest.

McGregor also made the top 10, alongside singer Lewis Capaldi, chef Gordon Ramsay and actors James McAvoy, Richard Madden, Tilda Swinton and David Tennant.

More than 300 Scottish celebrities were examined to collate the list.

Gillan averaged a total of more than two million searches every month.

This peaked with 2.74 million searches in July when Gunpowder Milkshake released, also starring Lena Headey, Freya Allan, Michelle Yeoh and Carla Gugino.

Second-place Butler was quite a bit behind, on 1.7 million searches per month.

Game Of Thrones star Rose Leslie only averaged 586,000 searches per month, but peaked at one million with the release of the BBC's Vigil series in August.

Sean Connery remained top of the charts when Scottish celebrities no longer with us are included.

The man most known for James Bond, who died in 2020, attracted an average of 5.175 million searches in 2021.
